Annabelle popped a tooth tonight. Her tenth. Per tradition, she wrote her tooth fairy a note, folding it carefully and putting it (and some shredded cheese) next to the pillow holding her tooth. I love reading those notes. Tonight’s was short, but I think it will always be my favorite. “Do you like my cursive?” […]

…ended much better than the first day of Sophie’s new IEP. After a note from the lawyer and a reminder of promises made (promises that are now legally binding) the classroom aide began Wednesday. I met her; she has a good vibe. But don’t tell Sophie — she’s not supposed to know this is “her” […]

I was about to post this video last night — but it seemed too sappy, even for cornball me. Then I woke up and one of my best friends had posted the exact sentiment (to the words) on Facebook. So I figured what the heck. And it’s true. Lawyers are great and all, but there’s […]

This afternoon is the dreaded IEP meeting, the day (finally) when we will (probably) discuss what sort of help (if any) Sophie is going to be offered in the classroom. She might be offered a one-way ticket out of the mainstream classroom at our neighborhood school. It’s happened before. It’s been years, but it still feels […]

Not to be melodramatic or anything, but today something happened that completely shook my faith in everything I’ve come to believe about Sophie in the last 7 years, 10 months and two days — something that slammed me hard, right back into that bed in that hospital where she was born. Where the doctor told […]

Yeah, old chum, I know. The line is really “life is a cabaret.” Not in this house. In this house it’s a carousel. An “Olivia the Pig” carousel, to be exact. And all that spinning made me a little nauseous this weekend. Valentines for 2 dozen kids (times 2) plus 2 science fair projects = […]

Christmas came a little early last night, when I pulled some treasures out of the bottom of Sophie’s backpack. First, there’s a beautiful (albeit crumpled) drawing made by Sophie’s BFF, Sarah. And then there’s a story by Sophie and Courtney. (Several times this semester, Sophie’s brought home sweet notes from someone named Courtney. Not to […]
