How can it be three years? I’ve never been completely clear on just who the girl in the party hat is. Sometimes it’s me, sometimes it’s Annabelle — usually it’s Sophie. Or some sort of sensibility about how life should be led. In any case, thanks for hanging with us. Hats off to you, friends.

One of Sophie’s wishes for her 8th birthday is to stay up all night. I’ll let you know how that goes. This song by Frances England is in heavy rotation on the kids channel on satellite radio — and every time I hear it, I think of Sophie. Oh, Sophie. You do have a mind […]

It wasn’t til I had the curling iron in my hand yesterday morning that I realized I’d never tried to curl Sophie’s hair before. It’s not about Sophie — there’s not a lot of time for any sort of hair primping in our house. With only minutes to spare til we absolutely-positively-had-to-leave-the-house-or-we’d-be-inexcusably-late, I unearthed the curling iron […]

There are two kids at Sophie’s school with Down syndrome. Sophie. And another little girl, who happens to be in Sophie’s class. Let’s call her Amelia. Sophie and Amelia look nothing alike. And yet, of course, they do. Even before Sophie chose wire-rimmed glasses that look a lot like Amelia’s, the similarities were striking, and […]

…ended much better than the first day of Sophie’s new IEP. After a note from the lawyer and a reminder of promises made (promises that are now legally binding) the classroom aide began Wednesday. I met her; she has a good vibe. But don’t tell Sophie — she’s not supposed to know this is “her” […]

I was about to post this video last night — but it seemed too sappy, even for cornball me. Then I woke up and one of my best friends had posted the exact sentiment (to the words) on Facebook. So I figured what the heck. And it’s true. Lawyers are great and all, but there’s […]

Have you ever had your own lawyer? Before we hired one to advocate at Sophie’s IEP meeting, I never had. I’ve written about lawyers, I’m related to lawyers, I contemplated becoming a lawyer. Some of my best friends are lawyers. But until today, I really had no idea what it felt like to have a […]

This afternoon is the dreaded IEP meeting, the day (finally) when we will (probably) discuss what sort of help (if any) Sophie is going to be offered in the classroom. She might be offered a one-way ticket out of the mainstream classroom at our neighborhood school. It’s happened before. It’s been years, but it still feels […]

Don’t see the movie Hop. That may be the single most valuable thing I’ve said in nearly three years of blogging. A terrible excuse for a movie. For a while, today, my sister tried to argue that actually Sex and the City 2 is the worst movie ever made, but I’m not sure. (Hop, by […]
