I love this story.
Monday night, I made a bracelet for Sarah’s mom, Rachel.
Sarah, if you have forgotten — and how could you, I talk about her all the time — is Sophie’s BFF. I love Rachel, too, and was happy to learn from Facebook that her birthday was Tuesday (happy I saw it BEFORE her [...]

Depsite my best (well, ok, half-hearted) attempts to love Phoenix, sometimes it doesn’t happen. But one thing I do adore about this town is how damn small it is — and when you have kids, you discover that over and over, in unexpected ways.
Turns out, Sophie’s teacher’s brother-in-law runs the coolest record store in town. One [...]

We went to the zoo Sunday afternoon, along with most of greater Phoenix. It was the perfect day — sunny but chilly enough that nothing smelled bad.
You might make the giraffes your first stop at the zoo, or the zebras or the squirrel monkeys, but not our family — we hit the carousel. The girls broke into [...]

A few weeks ago, I mentioned that fact that my dear friend Trish took her 16-year-old son Zach to Tucson to get a tattoo. She has written an absolutely stunning piece about it for New Times. Read it. You’ll be glad you did.

Stop the presses. It’s raining.
Actually, at the moment sun is pouring in through the blinds in my office, but I can see some dark clouds. We’ve had inches and inches of rain in Phoenix this week, something our streets — and our psyches — just aren’t prepared to deal with.
Last night Ray and I watched the [...]

Last week, New York Times blogger Lisa Belkin posed the question, “Should Down syndrome be cured?”
I posted a link to her piece, but I didn’t fire off a response. I needed to give the whole thing some thought, I figured. This is fundamental.
The truth is that I will think about this for my entire [...]

Do you ever notice that a comment can be far wiser than the blog post that prompted it?
I have, and more often than not, that comment has come from Elaine. We have nothing in common, really, other than daughters named Sophie (that’s how she found GIAPH a while back) but in getting to know her through [...]

We all fall into patterns — some more flattering than others.
One of my less becoming? I’ve fallen into a habit of dressing Sophie myself. She’s perfectly capable of choosing her clothes and dressing herself (with the exception of some shoes) and yet yesterday morning I realized that there I was — half-dressed myself, harried and [...]

Really, I’ve never been one to pick up a needle — even to sew on a button. I have a dim (in more ways than one) memory of Home Ec in 8th grade.
But I’m really digging this embroidery thing. There is something primal about tucking a stitch onto a line — particularly when that line [...]

I slid in just before bedtime last night, and Sophie greeted me with her usual exuberence (I wish you could all be greeted by Sophie after a long, hard day) and as usual, I asked how her day was. The response:
“FANTASTIC!”
Nice vocabulary word, and appropriately used, to boot.
