My Own Little Elf

posted Tuesday December 8th, 2009

The favorite Christmas movie in our house this year is “Elf”. (I’m also partial to “Love Actually”, but that one’s obviously not for family consumption.)

Maybe it’s just because I’ve seen it so many times, or because I was still feeling flu-ish upon the first viewing of this holiday season, but I’m struck suddenly this year with a comparison I can’t shake — un-P.C. though it might be.

Sophie is “Elf”. My own little elf. She embodies the spirit of Buddy in so many ways, mostly good and yes, a few bad, at least in terms of navigating this mad, mad world of ours. She’s loving, caring, industrious in her way. And yes, infuriating sometimes, when the world doesn’t fit her often quirky agenda. (No, not a good idea to bring a digital camera, stuffed piglet and several very long paintbushes to school! At least I made her leave the camera behind.)

I am tempted to do some Googling — I wonder if Buddy (consider the name) was created, in part, with someone with Down syndrome in mind. Probably not, just like I was never able to prove that Dopey the dwarf has DS. Maybe I’ll just leave well enough alone, and be glad Sophie’s not good enough with the scissors (yet) to cover the house in paper snowflakes.

But that might be nice, too.

  1. Probably no shocker here that both those movies are two of my holiday favorites too. (I know, can you believe it?)

I remember seeing Love Actually when I was pregnant with Leo. I bawled like a baby. It was one of the clues that I might be pg-that’s how emotional I got (though to be fair that movie still tears me up even in an un-knocked up state).

Anyway, back to Elf. That is an interesting theory and it makes perfect sense and of course, I relate. It reminds me a little of that part in Expecting Adam when little Adam’s sisters are whining over how they didn’t like their Christmas gifts and Adam is running around the house doing cartwheels over the box of batteries he opened, he is so grateful and doesn’t realize the batteries are actually for a toy (that he has yet to open). The batteries go WITH the toy they are not THE gift.

We certainly should take a cue from our little “Elves,” shouldn’t we?

  2. Cooper has ALWAYS reminded me of Curious George … but we just watched Elf again and I can definitely appreciate the comparison! I, too, love the part in Expecting Adam when he opens the batteries — priceless! And Love Actually … sigh … well, anything with Hugh Grant, really … sigh ….

  3. I think those characterizations- of loveable, irascible and “outsider” people always remind me of Kayli too. Honestly- sometimes I wish there were alot more of her in the world!

  4. I think angels are angels. Simple as that.
