Nit Twits

posted Wednesday April 29th, 2009

Okay, I have to say that it’s been one day, and I don’t yet understand Twitter. After much agonizing, I finally signed up and “followed” several people from my yahoo address book, and — well, not much happened. I have hundreds of friends on Facebook (not that I actually HAVE hundeds of friends, I haven’t even met many of my FB friends, leading me to wonder, how far can you get with social media if you’re anti-social?) and just a couple dozen on Twitter.
Before I signed off tonight, I noticed that you can stick a topic in a search engine and pull up tweets that mention it, so I searched for Down syndrome. With no further editorializing (except to say that I don’t know why the pictures are appearing so ginormous here), I’ll simply share the results, as they appeared:

  1. That’ss Interesting….. Hmmmm…..Wow. I can not get into twitter.

  2. Re: instant social technology

I’m not that old (yet), yet I remember when “dialing” a phone required an actual dial – you know, that round thingy with finger holes in it – click click click. And a long distance phone call, always announced by the operator, meant someone had died. (I still remember the call when I was Annabelle’s age – my Paw Paw.) These days one can call practically free to anywhere in the world.

Technology has been good to us. But Facebook and Twitter are too much. For that matter, I have forbidden those who would “text” me; like most cell phone calls (precursor to texting), most are only because you can, not to transmit a significant particle of communication.

Humbug. Who needs it? Tweet this!

PS: I dare you to find me on Twitter. Yes, I got an account there before I realized I didn’t get it, rather, it didn’t get me.

Curiously, I’m thinking about a Facebook account: friends have been inviting, plus my church is going techno. I’ve been nominated to (get this) the “Marketing Subcommittee.”

  3. oh you fell for it huh… is it everything you hoped it would be?

  4. I’m on twitter, and gotta say, it’s a kind of fun thing, but as I tweet i wonder which new bobble will soon replace it

  5. Totally not interested in Twitter. And the idiocy of some people is seriously astounding. What about that comment about the “sperm with Down syndrome”? Unbelievable.

  6. Wow, I have heard so much twitter hype lately and wondered if I was missing out on something. But after reading this post, it looks like there are a lot of twits on twitter.

I get so angry when I come across cruel ignorant remarks on ds. I always get the urge to go visit and “educate” these people. I want them to know that life is fair, very fair… meaning that someday they will most likely get the chance to face something as hard as ds. After all I saw during my 16 weeks in NICU and PICU with my daughter, I will gladly take ds over the other things life hands out.

  7. Hello, its STAR1 the twitterer himself and I’d like to first say to the blogger and Jen. My comment was in no way to offend people with DS in anyway.. Was really makin fun of the dolls. But I kno either way was a bit crude. So I apologize. And twitter is cool, jus another way to micro blog ur thoughts, feelingsn what ur doing/eating/watching etc… Again my apologies to those who have family and friends with the disease.. I did not intend to hurt or make fun of.

  8. STAR1,

It is not a disease. It is an extra 21st chomosome. It was nice (and brave) of you to come out here an apologize in person.

You were making fun of the dolls by comparing them to my daughter. Go have a look at my doll. You’ll never make that comparison again.

  9. It’s not a disease. Get educated, please.

  10. well….you were making fun of the dolls because you thought they looked like they had down syndrome….so if they looked like “typical” children you probably wouldn’t make fun of them right? i would have to say that is offensive and maybe you were to high to realize it but you WERE making fun of people with ds. so……maybe you might want to cut back on smoking weed cause your brain cells are certainly fried! it’s nice that you did attempt an apology though, but next time think before you post….
