I’m practically out of my seat and cheering for Sophie reading this post! I love reading your blog and your daughter sounds so awesome. Hearing stuff like this makes me realize that the future for my nearly 8month old daughter with Down syndrome can be very promising indeed. And full of stubbornness and debate and learning, just how I always imagined raising a child, any child, would be.

Thanks for sharing your family. Whatever comes of Sophie’s lobbying, I can’t wait to hear where this story goes!

Sophie, I’m proud of you, too!

George Bernard Shaw, an Irish playwright might say to the principal perplexed by your desire to join the drama class:
“I hear you say “Why?” Always “Why?”
You see things; and you say “Why?”
But I dream things that never were; and I say “Why not?”

I hope to read news of a board meeting to discuss this possibility; I will be there cheering you on! Like George Bernard Shaw, I say, “Why not?”, too.

Nit only do I think she should write a letter I think getting on the docket at the next school board meeting is a must!
If you don’t ask you get little in this life!
I think it’s great she’s so determined!
Perhaps a future in sales?
I can’t teach people what Sophie has naturally ….
God knows I’ve been trying for 24 years.
YA either have it or you don’t….persistence

But! Sophie is gifted! She was gifted to us mere mortals as evidence that guts and grins come in all shapes, sizes, and personalities. Just like declaring what is ‘normal’ is merely a suggestion of reality…
I am sure if you truly questioned Sophie, she believes she is just as gifted as anyone at the school next door.
Note to Sophie; I admire your desire to persue what others only ‘think’ about doing , and that you are wise enough and vocal enough to stand up for yourself!
Note to Amy; You should be a very proud mommy, that you are raising a fearfully and wonderfully made child. Please continue to have Sophie “rock on with her extra chromosome!

She should write a letter to the school board! This is SUCH crap!!! All students can benefit from a great creative outlet (not that this one seems so great given the blatant discrimination). Keep us posted! Best of luck!
