Love this post. My daughter is 9 and you can come and stare as long as you like! It is tough to adjust to the random hugs- not everyone gets them, just the ones my daughter feels attracted to for some reason. At 9 she has learned to be more cautious about all unasked for touching- school helps with that. I say- "hands to self" and it works for all kinds of things! But I have to say that if a child comes up and hugs me I do not feel like a stranger- I think no one sees themselves that way really. Some people who offer freebies make me uncomfortable but some do it with great generosity and love and that feels better.

I agree with Maya: enjoy the free stuff. It makes me think of my friend Eric. He's not DS (he's a 30-something-year-old medical doctor, and one of the best rock-climbers I know), but he's got a DS-kind of unguarded cheerfulness. We call him Bubbles. When anyone asks how he is, he answers, "Fan-TAAAAS-tic!" in a way that tends to make strangers so happy that they start giving him things. Every time he goes to the supermarket, it seems, Bubbles comes home with samples of the homemade sausage the meat-guy makes for only his family, or the bowling-uniform the clerk no longer wanted, or something else nifty. Maybe because Bubbles Eric is so far from being disabled, it never occurred to me to feel guilty about all the gifts he somehow elicits, and then shares with his friends. He was my neighbor in Connecticut, and I missed it when he moved back to Texas.

You are starting to sway me towards a Disney vacation. Even if I am ambivalent about it...it sounds kind of fun.

Have you read Inside the Mouse? I haven't read it in ages but I remember it being interesting for behind-the-scenes stuff.(http://www.amazon.com/Inside-Mouse-Disney-World-Project/dp/0822316242/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1236964957&sr=8-1)

Great post Amy! I felt like I was right there with you. And that's great news about the margaritas by the way. I love the line about the happiest place on earth attracting the allegedly happiest people.
I can't believe that woman picked Sophie up--I mean, I can believe it but I can't if you know what I mean. It's hard to contain that love, isn't it. Sometimes I feel kind of like a creep for trying.
It sounds like a great time. And you must be a very patient person to handle a party of 12 at Disneyland. Oh and also, about the "free stuff" that Sophie gets, I'm ambivelant about it too but I say go for it. I think we all deserve it.

I've missed you!
